IPL History

Royal Challengers Bangalore 2008

The Royal Challengers Bangalore was one of the franchises that were established during the pioneering stage of the Indian Premier League. They were one of the eight original franchises that were formed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to compete in the first-ever T20 cricket tournament in the country. Initially, the IPL best team had difficulty having a breakthrough in the Indian Premier League. However, their next three seasons in the IPL have been fruitful where they have two finishes in the runners-up.

Notable Players

Over the years, the Royal Challengers Bangalore perfected their formula of purchasing players with enough cricketing experience that has the potential to be successful in the cricket league. They have plenty of notable players, but the following are considered to have provided the most significant achievement to the team.

Virat Kohli

When Delhi rejected the opportunity to get the 2008 Under-19 World Cup-winning athlete, the RCB took the chance. After fifteen years since his debut on the team, Kohli remains loyal to the squad and is the only player in the IPL who played for only one franchise. Kohli is the captain of the team and is deemed one of the iconic players in the Indian Premier League.

Chris Gayle

Gayle became a member of the RCB in the 2011 season of the IPL and during that edition, he propelled as one of the dark horses among the T20 cricket leagues. In the following season, he was awarded as the top earner in the Indian Premier League. However, his performances were marred during his later stint on the IPL best team which eventually led to the decision of the managers to not renew his contract after the end of the 2017 campaign.

IPL Best Team Rivals

RCB Rival Teams

The RCB has plenty of rivals in the Indian Premier League, like the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Chennai Super Kings

Among their rivals in the IPL, the Kolkata Knight Riders are considered the arch-enemies of the RCB. The rivalry between the two teams is considered the oldest and the most intense in the cricket league.

During the 2009 season of the IPL, the rivalry started when both teams faced off earlier and later in the competition, with each one of the Royal Challengers Bangalore winning. They have plenty of matches together that are always neck-and-neck in nature.

Meanwhile, the rivalry between the RCB and the Chennai Super Kings originated from the Kaveri River water conflict between the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. During the 2011 season of the Indian Premier League, the RCB and Super Kings faced off in the finals, which the latter won.

Fan Base

The Royal Challengers Bangalore has accumulated a solid fan base all over the years since its debut, not only in the city of Bangalore but also all over India. The supporters of the RCB are known as the “Bold Army.” When there is a match, if the fans attend in huge numbers, they typically create a sea of color red, along with uplifting chants of “R-C-B.”

During the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League, the RCB became the very first franchise in the IPL that has provided Wi-Fi connectivity for the supporters. Fans were able to post on social media their reactions to the events happening on the field in real time.

Final Thoughts

The Royal Challengers Bangalore is a cricket franchise in the Indian Premier League with plenty of achievements under its belt.
