Franchise History

The Delhi Capitals was established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) along with the other seven clubs to make up the franchises of the newly founded Indian Premier League. The IPL was created by BCCI to establish a professional cricket league in the country that will adopt the franchise model of the tournament. The inaugural competition was held from April to June 2008.

The teams of the IPL represent the eight cities in India, which also includes the capital city itself, Delhi. The newly formed IPL best team was owned by a property development corporation called GMR Group, which was bought by the company for US$84 million. 

Back then, the franchise was called Delhi Daredevils, which was owned by Parth Jindal. In 2018, the name Delhi Daredevils was dropped, and they adopted Delhi Capitals instead. The reason for the change was that Jindal believed that the word “capital” with Delhi, being the centre of culture and commerce of the country, was more fitting to describe the cricket franchise.

IPL Best Team History

2008 – 2015

During the inaugural tournament of the Indian Premier League, the Delhi Capitals managed to win their first two games against Rajasthan Royals and the Deccan Chargers. Their subsequent victories are in their matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings, but they lost to Kings XI Punjab in the finals. 

The IPL best team had a successful spell at the 2009 edition of the IPL, in which they landed third in the points table and they were qualified for the semi-finals. Meanwhile, the Delhi Capitals had a disappointing season in the 2013 Indian Premier League. Eventually, they were defeated by the Mumbai Indians during the finals.

2016 – 2019

The Delhi Capitals started their  2016 campaign with a mixed season, producing a few wins and defeats. During the finals, they were defeated by the Gujarat Lions despite Dwayne Smith scoring for the team. 

In 2018, during the transfer season, the franchise can only retain three players from their roster. Ultimately, the Delhi Capitals have kept Chris Morris, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant. However, following a debate regarding conflict of interest, team manager Rahul Dravid stepped down from his post.

2020 – Present

In the 2023 IPL season, the team faced significant challenges, leading to them being the first team eliminated from the playoff race.



The Delhi Capitals were formerly known as the Delhi Daredevils. The official logo of the Delhi Capitals was a roaring lion with the team’s name surrounding the animal. The lion symbolises power and bravery, which are the values the team are trying to uphold.


The official motto of the Delhi Capitals is “This is New Delhi. This is #NayiDilli”, symbolising the club’s pride in representing their city.


The anthem of the Delhi Capitals is the Roar Machaa, which was popularised by Shreyas Talpade. The song has a bouncy beat and lyrically denotes team spirit and strength.


The jersey of the Delhi Capitals dominantly features the colour blue with some streaks of red and silver. The official logo of the team with the main sponsors was also embedded in the jersey.

The official home ground of the Delhi Capitals is the New Delhi Arun Jaitley Stadium, which the teams also utilise to play their home matches. The IPL best team also has a second home arena, the modern Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur. However, the team only uses it as a backup.
